The Best 6 Books I Read in the Past 6 Months

1. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

Hands down, best book on this list. Best book I’ve read in the…man, probably at least 2 years.

In a peanutshell:

There are 2 mindsets that everyone chooses to have in any area of their life: the Growth Mindset and the Fixed Mindset.

The Fixed Mindset tells you you can never get any better at anything, you are who you are and that’s it. Your current traits define you, and failures measure your worth. The Growth Mindset tells you you can become better, at anything. Every failure is a learning opportunity. You are not set in stone, you can be whatever you want to be.

Really good book for a guy like me who struggles with self-loathing, self-doubt, fear of rejection, and fear of failure.

2. Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

“Grit” is a weird little weird that seems to defy description. “Hard work?” “Effort?” “Passion?”

In a peanutshell:

“Grit” is a quality, a trait, an action. People can choose to become “grittier.” Essentially, “grit” means you stick with it. You don’t give up, you overcome extreme adversity and succeed. Best yet — anyone can learn how to become grittier, more tenacious, more dedicated to whatever they’re doing.

Grit has also been proven to be a greater indicator of success than things like IQ tests or talent. The grueling first year at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD sees a lot of students drop out in the face of such rigorous physical, mental, and emotional adversity. But it’s not the buffest, smartest, or most talented students that tend to stay in — it’s the gritty ones.

3. Slipstream Time Hacking

I know, this sounds like something Dr. Spock reads on his spare time. It’s not about physics or aerospace dynamics — it’s about how to become at least 10x more productive.

In a peanutshell:

This book is the best productivity book I’ve ever read.

There is an enormous chunk of “average” people in the world. There is a very small amount of extraordinary people in the world, who seem to find success in everything. Their secret isn’t simply being “gifted.” They know how to manipulate their time so well, they effectively like 10 lifetimes over the course of their entire life.

How? Well, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an average person comes around…well, once in a lifetime. But since these extraordinary people create 10x more time in their lives (waking up early, mastering focus on the here-and-now, etc.), they can easily “lap” the average person’s life, creating multiple “once-in-a-lifetime opportunities” for themselves.

4. Peak: Secrets From the New Science of Expertise

You’ve undoubtedly heard of Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000 hour” rule — it takes about 10,000 hours to become an “expert” at something.

That’s not exactly true.

In a peanutshell:

The time, effort, and practice is takes to become an expert doesn’t matter as much as the quality of effort. This is why you can jog every day for 10 years, and by the end you’re still just an average jogger. You can practice playing the piano for 4 hours a day for 10 years, and by the end, you’re not going to be a virtuoso.

10,000 hours doesn’t achieve success. Only deliberate practice, an extremely methodical, formulaic, and exhausting process, can you achieve true world-class mastery in a given area. Peak teaches you exactly how to do that.

5. Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable

Tim Grover was the key mental training coach for such people like Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, and the GOAT himself, Michael Jordan. Read his coaching techniques to becoming unstoppable firsthand.

Grover is the kind of guy who, if challenged to a contest of who-can-run-the-longest, would win or die from exhaustion as he ran himself to death.

Yes. He’s intense.

But if you want to become the greatest in the world, that’s the attitude you need. There is good talent, there is even great talent, but unstoppable talent is rare. Grover teaches you his exact mental training for Michael Jordan and how you can train yourself to be an unstoppable force in your area of choice.

6. The Millionaire Next Door

One of the best finance books I’ve ever read. Being a “millionaire” might not be as cool today, but it still elicits images of sports cars, gold rolexes, and tailored designer suits.

You’d never suspect the plain neighbor next door to be a millionaire, would you?

In a peanutshell:

Most of the nation’s millionaires don’t live in mansions, they don’t own a red Ferrari, and don’t talk about their wealth. That’s because their mindset about wealth is entirely different than anything you’ve probably seen or heard about.

Average citizens have become incredibly wealthy through simple means: extreme discipline, family values, and intense effort through their career. Imagine 2 millionaires: one who owns 3 cars, a 3 story mansion, and enough clothes for a small village. The other owns an older pickup truck, lives in a modest home in the suburbs, and runs their own construction business. The 2nd millionaire is far better off — they have an enormous savings and they live a life that doesn’t require a lot of wealth.

This book is an excellent how-to guide to build wealth and maintain a modest appearance so your neighbors would have had no idea you were a millionaire.
